What Is A Pitbull?
When you envision the image of a Pitbull, most see a muscular, medium- large sized dog who boasts a broad head and a deep chest. However, you might be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as a “Pit-Bull.” Because the Pitbull is not breed specific. The word Pitbull is actually an umbrella term used as an identifier for several breeds combined into one, and often referred to as “Bully Breeds.” Therefore, Pitbulls are not a single breed of dog, but rather a general term for a TYPE of dog that includes multiple breeds and mixed breed dogs. “Pitbull” is often used as a blanket term for dogs that resemble the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier. Essentially, there is no such thing as a purebred Pitbull, although the name is used as shorthand for the purebred American pit bull terrier.
Sadly, due to human error and miseducation the term “Pitbull” has become associated with dogfighting and aggressive behavior over the years. Unfairly, this prejudice has fallen upon the entire category of dogs referred to as “Bully Breeds.” Have you ever heard the phrase, “There are no “Bad Dogs,” there are only bad owners. In this instance that exact phrase holds true across the board for ALL DOGS and should not specifically be directed towards Pitbulls. Keep in mind miseducation and misunderstanding has no reflection on the temperament of the dog, moreover, Bully Breeds are generally playful, loyal and affectionate dogs when properly trained.
The following are classified as Bully Breeds:
Breed Characteristics
Pitbull-type dogs typically have muscular, stocky builds with deep chests and large, square heads. They’re well known for being determined dogs. When given tasks or instructions, they aim to please and won’t give up easily until they have accomplished what’s desired. Pitbulls usually love people, strangers included, and love attention. Training and socialization of your Pitbull puppy from a young age is important. However, adult dogs are also a benefit, because they already have the experience of training and/or they are now old enough to understand what’s expected of them and are able to respond accordingly. Regardless, the consistency of training your dog at any age is always important as it allows you and your dog the opportunity to bond and gain a relationship of mutual respect.
Are Pit Bulls Dangerous?
When evaluating whether or not Pitbull-type dogs are dangerous, you must first remember that ANY BREED of dog can be dangerous. Meaning, dog aggression is not specific to one breed of dog. Aggression can be found in all kinds of dogs. Breed does not automatically identify one kind of dog as temperamental or aggressive.
In order to understand what can make a dog aggressive, you should always consider the following factors:
- Any dog that is deliberately bred from a line of aggressive dogs is more likely to have naturally aggressive tendencies.
- A dog who is not allowed to roam free or one who is primarily left chained up and alone is more likely to develop aggression.
- Any dog that has never been properly socialized, this includes both human as well as other dogs or other animals.
- An intact male dog is more likely to show aggression toward other dogs than one who is not.
Unfortunately, Pitbull type dogs are preferred by irresponsible individuals whose sole purpose is to use them for profit and personal gain (i.e. illegal dog fighting). Some were intentionally bred for aggression, purposefully deprived of food, care, proper training, love, affection and socialization in hopes of “Making them more aggressive.” However, the truth of the matter is that ANY dog who is subject to any kind of inhumane conditions can pose a threat and can be considered dangerous. In summary, Pitbulls are no more “Dangerous” than any other dog and are able to thrive in the proper, positive living environment.
“Don’t Believe the Hype!” Pitbulls are EXCELLENT dogs when placed in responsible hands.
